The Quilts of Valor ® Foundation is an ongoing national service effort started by Catherine Roberts in 2003. She was inspired by her son's deployment to Iraq and her desire to see that returning troops were welcomed home with love and gratitude. The Foundation has presented over 400,000 quilts to veterans and service members in all 50 states. Their mission is to “cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” The mission is being carried out locally by our Patriotic Piecers, a small group of about 25 volunteers.
A Quilt of Valor ® (QOV) is a quality-made quilt that is awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war. The quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded.
More than 580 local service members and veterans have been awarded Quilts of Valor by the Patriotic Piecers since the group was formed in 2013. The group relies on monetary and fabric donations to make each quilt, and the members volunteer their time to ensure each one is unique and personal. The quilts are presented to all military service members regardless of conflict, declared war or otherwise, in which they served.
If you would like to nominate someone to receive a Quilt of Valor, visit the QOVF website.
